Abstract

The author tested the interrator and intrarator reliability of the ¢¥sip-and-swallow¢¥ method for measurement of whole mouth taste threshold in 40 healthy Korean young male and female subjects. The solutions used for gustatory stimulation were 4 series of 13-step serial solutions of sucrose, sodium chloride, citric acid, and quinine hydrochloride. For each subject the taste recognition threshold and taste recognition threshold were measured two times. each by two different examiners on the first day. After I week the same procedure was performed by the same examiners. The Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficients were calculated to assess the interrator and intrarator reliability of the procedure.
The results were as follows:
1. For interrator reliability test, the Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficients were ranged 0.3973 to 0.8266. with average value of 0.6697. A statistical significance was found in the all occasion of comparison for 4 basic tastes.
2. For intrarator reliability test, the Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficients were ranged 0.4177 to 0.7912, with average value of 0.5811. A statistical significance was found in the all occasion of comparison for 4 basic tastes.
